If our body is not properly absorbing nutrients, we lack the basic building blocks to power our body. There are various reasons for why absorption is occurring including intestinal damage from Celiac/gluten damage to the villi, parasites robbing our system, lack of enzymes not breaking food down properly and IBS.

If you are tired all of the time, micronutrient testing can be a useful tool to see if your body is lacking the nutrients it needs to power itself. There are two types of testing to determine levels of essential nutrients.

  1. Organic Acid Testing: Organics acid test is a comprehensive metabolic test that looks at 70 health markers including amino acids, vitamins, minerals, oxidative stress among other key markers by measuring organic acids which are a by product of metabolism. The test also provides levels of intestinal yeast and bacterial. High levels of bacteria/yeast can make a behavior disorder worse as well as movement disorders, fatigue and immune function. Often those with chronic illnesses and neurological disorders often excrete several abnormal organic acids in their urine. The cause of these high levels could include oral antibiotic use, high sugar diets, immune deficiencies, acquired infections, as well as genetic factors. Organic acids also looks at mitochrondial function for producing energy. The test has been to identify why fatigue is occurring, irregular bowel function, lowered concentration and hyperactivity.

The cost of this test is approx $400-$600 (can) and is measured through urine.

    2. Micronutrient Testing: this tests measure the function of 35 nutritional components including vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and amino acids within our white blood cells. This can be a great snapshot to see which areas your are deficient in, though you will not get the yeast/bacteria portion like you would with an organic acids test.
